Memorial Scholarships

The Northern Shenandoah Valley Master Gardener Association will award up to six $1,000.00 Memorial Scholarships to eligible graduating high-school and home-school seniors in the counties of Clarke, Frederick, Page, Shenandoah, and Warren and the City of Winchester. Download the 2020 NSVMGA Memorial Scholarship Application.

The goal of the Memorial Scholarships is to encourage students to focus on a horticultural-related field while attending college and to continue volunteering and supporting their communities. Pictured are several of the 2019 Scholarship recipients: Cynthia Fairbanks, Julija Martin, and Mikalyla St.Claire, along with Extension Master Gardener Cathy Dickey.

The scholarships are a memorial to those active NSVMGA Extension Master Gardeners who died during their volunteer service to the VCE Master Gardener program.

The NSVMGA Scholarship Review Committee will base awards on scholastic merit. Additional eligibility criteria includes student volunteerism and membership in an agricultural, horticultural, or related science-based community service organization, such as FFA, 4-H, Humane Society, etc. and plans to attend a Virginia college or university (two or four-year program) with plants to pursue a career in agriculture or horticulture.

Along with the application, letters of recommendation are required from a faculty member and volunteer-organization leader. In addition, students mush address a letter to the Scholarship Committee Chairperson that addresses why the student is deserving of the scholarship and should include goals the student has set for the future.

Download the 2020 NSVMGA Memorial Scholarship Application for more information, including all eligibility criteria.

Application deadline is March 31.

Contact Memorial Scholarship Chairperson Lynn Hoffmann with any questions or to return the completed Memorial Scholarship package. Award recipients will be notified no later than May 20th.

Extension Master Gardener Lynn led a talk and workshop this weekend on how to use plant material to decorate for the holidays. The attendees had a great time learning and creating together, and made some beautiful decor!

Want to give it a try? Learn how at www.johnson.k-state.edu/lawn-garden/agent-articles/miscellaneous/holiday-decorating-with-fresh-gr.... If you want in-person help, Lynn teaches a similar workshop each year, so keep an eye on our website and this page for next year’s schedule!
