Virginia Cooperative Extension is offering Northern Shenandoah Valley residents the opportunity to have their well, spring, or cistern water tested for common contaminants. The Drinking Water Testing Clinics give people with private water systems access to affordable water testing, help to interpret their water test results, and information about possible treatment options. Since public water systems are regulated and regularly tested, additional testing isn’t needed if homes are on town/city water or if your community has its own water system. Sample analysis includes testing for bacteria, lead, copper, arsenic, iron, manganese, pH, hardness, sodium, sulfate, fluoride, and nitrate.
The cost for sample analysis is $70 per sample kit. A limited number of low-cost kits are available; please contact the county you’d like to participate in to learn more.
The schedule for testing is as follows:
- Week 1 (April 27-29, 2026) – Clarke, Shenandoah, and Warren. Sample Drop-Off is Wednesday, April 29th from 7-10 a.m. The registration deadline for Week 1 is Wednesday, April 22nd.
- Week 2 (May 11-13, 2026) – Frederick and Page Counties. Sample Drop-Off is Wednesday, May 13th from 7-10 a.m. The registration deadline for Week 2 is Wednesday, May 6th.
You can participate in any county (even if it’s not your county of residence), but you must be able to pick up and drop off samples at that location. Each county has kit pickup, kickoff meeting (in person and virtual), and interpretation meeting dates specific to that county.
