Virginia Invasive Species: Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) have started to hatch. In April you may see: (1) egg masses containing unhatched eggs and (2) the nearly hatched 1st instar nymphs, which are very small and black with white spots. (In early to mid summer, during their 4th instar, they are red with white spots and black markings. In mid summer, as adults, the insects have gray wings with black spots.)Please scrape and smash eggs and kill nymphs to help slow the spread. Visit bit.ly/slfreportva or vce.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0fdsQXRg8TO8uzk to report a SLF sighting in Virginia. Learn more with Virginia Cooperative Extension SLF resources at ext.vt.edu/agriculture/commercial-horticulture/spotted-lanternfly.html. If you have a question about SLF in Virginia, contact us or your local Virginia Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Program volunteers. In graphic, yellow counties have a confirmed population. Red counties have a confirmed population and are under a Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services quarantine for the insect.SLF photos courtesy VCE Northern Shenandoah Valley Agriculture and Natural Resources.See #slffriday posts for more info, where we share what you should know RIGHT NOW to help slow the spread of #SpottedLanternfly and other invasive species in Virginia.- EMG Stacey ...
