What is it? By EMG Debbie
Recently I saw a very unusual and attractive insect that I’ve never seen before. It was crawling along the dirt floor of our barn and eventually made its way into a hole nearby. This pretty creature looked like an ant, a very large, red, fury ant. The Eastern Velvet Ant, Dasymutilla occidentalis, isn’t an ant at all, but actually a wasp. This wasp can deliver a nasty sting so painful it has earned it the nickname of “Cow Killer.” Only the females have stingers. The females do not have wings, but the males do and feed on nectar. Pictured below is a female. Read more here mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/field-guide/velvet-antstexasinsects.tamu.edu/red-velvet-ant-or-cow-killer/ ... See MoreSee Less
